Because “YOU WILL WHAT YOU WANT!”

At at the end of February, Time Magazine met up with our current POTUS, President Barack Obama, and Principle Ballerina, Misty Copeland. The interview discussed overcoming adversity and stereotypes in their respective fields in which they have both become top achievers. These adversities would include the fact that both are of mixed race (but don’t look caucasian), were raised by single mothers, and overall just did not “look right for the part.”

In case you live under a rock, President Obama is the first of a race other than white to be elected as President of the United States. Ballerina, Misty Copeland, is the first African-American woman to become a Principle Dancer at America’s National Ballet Company; American Ballet Theatre (ABT). The ABT’s website states it has been “recognized as a national treasure” since 1940 when it was founded. The ABT also states it is the only institution in its organization that performs on annual tours inside, and outside of the United States.

Being  a Principle Dancer means that Misty is a true ‘Prima Ballerina’ in every sense of the term. Becoming a Principle Dancer means that you are the star of the ballet. As Misty said in her interview, only a mere 1% become Principal Dancers in their company. In the interview Misty discusses how her athletic build and large feet often caused her to be denied entry into ballet companies and roles in classical ballets. In her ESPN special titled “The Firebird,” Misty discusses how she was actually told that she was the wrong color to dance in’Swan Lake.’ Listen to what she says about it here…

Misty has used her platform to bring worldwide attention to her struggle to become a professional ballerina by authoring books, community outreach, and endorsements through companies like Under Armour. Under Armour launched a campaign called “I Will What I Want” which features Misty in a captivating and breathtaking commercial. The commercial starts out by reading a letter in which a young ballerina is denied entry into a ballet academy because of her physical features. Click on the link below to check out the commercial…

Misty continues in the interview by describing that it is a heavy weight to be representing the black population so she tries to focus on just being the best dancer she can be. However, she goes on to say that being black in such an un-diversed field does give her that “fire” that she doesn’t think she would have had if she didn’t have to push her self a little bit harder than her peers.

Misty condones POTUS for his humbleness and ability to stay that way regardless of being at the top of his game and so well liked by the population. POTUS reminds Misty that even as a Prima Ballerina you will have friends who will remind you of “that one time” story that will bring you back down to earth.

Here’s my takeaway from  this interview…

Barack Obama as a young bi-racial male overcame all the odds that are against a black male who was raised in an urban city by a single mother. By ignoring the odds, stereotypes, or anyone who said he couldn’t…HE DID! The same goes for Misty Copeland…SHE DID! These stories will go down in our history books and will be highly sought after by any child who feels like that can’t do or be anything more than society tell them to be. Our next generation will see that there hope for the future so long as you continue to pursue it. “I WILL WHAT I WANT”

Can a Relationship Last w/o Familial Support?

In case you care…rumors of Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna breaking up sparked all kinds of buzz in the entertainment news industry. The rumors started when Rob Kardashian (RK) suddenly deleted all of the pictures from his IG account.

eonline.com reported that there was indeed a blow up that occurred between the two that may have been caused by family tension on the relationship. Here’s the background…

Blac Chyna (BC) and RK went public with their relationship back in January and caused the internet to go into an uproar. The reason why? BC is RK’s sister’s boyfriend’s baby momma, and his other sister’s husband’s ex-girlfriend’s best friend! Confused? Maybe the ‘Kardashian Web’ can explain it for you.

 

Still confused? All you need to know is that the couple being together is major Kardashian drama! KARDASHIAN DRAMA?! You don’t say. Needless to say, the couple was back together before Kris Jenner could take a breath of relief. RK cleared the air with this IG post a day after the debacle.

In all seriousness, (let’s pretend we’re not talking about the Kardashians and a butt model for a second) how long can this relationship really last without the approval of RK’s family? This applies to anyone who is in a relationship that does not have the support, or approval of immediate family.

Studies have shown that your family actually can tell whether or not your significant other is right for you before you can. This might be due to that ‘love is blind’ thing that you feel at the beginning of a relationship. Truly, you really should listen to what people are telling you about your new beau…but you probably won’t.

It’s been a few weeks now since the rumored break up. Since then we’ve seen the couple vacation to Jamaica, heard rumors that BC is pregnant, and watch them take multiple trips to In-N-Out Burger. For now the couple is living in bliss, but I’m sure that this won’t be the last time we hear of a break up between them.

Russell Wilson & Ciara Finally Engaged!

I’m sure you’ve all heard by now that singer/dancer Ciara is engaged to her beau NFL Quarterback, Russell Wilson. This news wouldn’t be so exciting to us if we weren’t waiting for the ‘day after the wedding photos.’

Remember last year, when Russell Wilson stated in an interview that he and Ciara were practicing celibacy until they were married? So do I! When I heard about their engagement, the first thing that came to mind was that these two fine looking people were finally going to get to know each other that much better…is that wrong? Oh well.

That is of course IF they are still indeed waiting until they are married. Russell said it himself in the same interview; “I ain’t gonna lie to y’all now—I need you to pray for us, I know y’all have seen her on the screen. If there’s a 10, she’s a 15.” He’s not lying when he talks about his hot fiancé. Have you seen Ciara’s music video ‘Promise?’ I hope Russell hasn’t if he wants to maintain that abstinence.

A young and hot couple waiting until marriage to have sex is rare this day in age. I truly admire them, their dedication to their beliefs, and the role models that they can be for the youngsters who look up to them. They will be a much stronger couple for this in the end.

Lady Gaga & Taylor Kinney Caught on Kiss Cam in My Hometown!

Chicago Blackhawks Kiss Cam: Lady Gaga & Taylor Kinney

Lady Gaga and her fiancé, actor Taylor Kinney, were caught on the  Kiss Cam at a Chicago Blackhawks game. I don’t know if it makes any difference to you but Chicago is my hometown so this video had me really excited!

After thinking about it, it isn’t so crazy that the couple is in Chicago. Taylor Kinney does play  Lt. Kelly Severed on the USA show Chicago Fire (the show is indeed filmed in Chicago).

The adorable couple also participated in the city’s annual Polar Plunge on the same day. The Polar Plunge is a fundraiser for Chicago’s Special Olympics where a bunch of crazy participants run into Lake Michigan in the chilly Chicago winter. I have never participated in the Polar Plunge myself…but here is info if you’re crazy enough to do it.

Either way, I’m so glad they represented on the Kiss Cam…in my hometown…and raised money for the Special Olympics. You go Gaga!

Disney Hit the Nail on the Head w/ Zootopia

The Wrap: ‘Zootopia’ Devours Record $73.7 Million in Box Office Win

It is comes as no surprise to me that this movie topped the box office this weekend! My husband and I couldn’t wait to take the kids to see it because of the adorable and hilarious trailers.

Once in the theatre, the movie far surpassed my expectation! Like other Disney animated films, Zootopia had a deep and amazing message.

No matter who you are, where you come from, and what others might expect from you; only you are in control of your destiny!

There were so many times during the movie when I turned towards my kids to see if they were receiving the message…they were! The movie also touches on how we treat people that are different than we are. Or what will happen if we feel like the only way to get ahead is by destroying others…sound familiar?

Some adults should see this movie more than the kids. While touching on some very hot topic issues and sending a message; Zootopia will make you laugh, cry, and think. It’s a must see!

Guilty Until Proven Innocent?

First of all…my condolences go out to the Houston/Brown family. No one ever deserves or expects to lose their child, especially in such a tragic way. No matter the level of celebrity; this woman was someone’s child, sister, niece, cousin, and friend. They will forever remember the tragedy they had to heal from when they think of her.

As soon that it was known that Bobbi Kristina (BK) was on life support after being found in a bathtub her fiancé, Nick Gordon, was immediately under public scrutiny.  There were even reports that BK had bruises on her face from possibly being beaten before she was drowned. Nick Gordon had no other choice but to lawyer up and keep his mouth shut regarding the events leading up to the tragedy which ended BK’s life.

Now that the autopsy report has finally been released, Nick and his legal team have finally felt the urge to speak out. Although the report was complete over a year ago; prosecutors kept it confidential. Why would they do such a thing? In order to keep BK’s ‘assumed’ murderer guilty until proven otherwise.

I am not in any way saying that I believe Nick Gordon is innocent or had no involvement regarding BK’s death. However, I am saying that we as a society shouldn’t assume people are guilty before they are proven to be guilty…or innocent…whatever.

Imagine if he is innocent. This man wasn’t allowed to see his girlfriend while she was on life support, mourn her at her funeral, or say goodbye before she died. All of this because her family, the media, and society labeled him as her ‘killer boyfriend’ before any evidence was present.

Our societies label of ‘guilt until proven innocent’ is bullshit…that is all.

Here it is…my first blog! I am extraordinarily excited to begin this new journey in my life. Following dreams is something that my parents always advised against (because dreams don’t pay bills).
